Nandina domestica ‘Flirt’, commonly known as Flirt™ Nandina, is a compact, evergreen shrub renowned for its vibrant red new growth and year-round interest. Despite its common name, “heavenly bamboo,” it is not a true bamboo but belongs to the barberry family (Berberidaceae).

  • Growth Habit: Dwarf, spreading shrub reaching approximately 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) in height and 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) in width.
  • Foliage: New growth emerges in a deep red hue during spring and autumn, maintaining its vibrant color through summer. Mature foliage transitions to a rich green, providing a striking contrast.
  • Flowers: While Nandina domestica species can produce small white flowers, ‘Flirt’ is primarily cultivated for its foliage, and flowering is not a prominent feature.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. For optimal foliage color, especially the deep red new growth, planting in areas with ample sunlight is recommended.
  • Soil: Adaptable to a variety of soil types, including free-draining loams and heavier clay soils, provided they are well-drained.
  • Watering: Once established, ‘Flirt’ exhibits drought tolerance. However, regular watering during prolonged dry periods will promote healthy growth.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance; requires minimal pruning. If shaping is desired, prune every 3–4 years. Applying a slow-release fertilizer in spring can enhance growth.
