Purple Cootamundra Wattle

Purple Cootamundra Wattle (Acacia baileyana ‘Purpurea’) is a striking ornamental wattle known for its unique purple-tinged, feathery foliage and abundant, bright golden-yellow flowers. This small to medium-sized tree typically grows 4–8 metres tall and spreads broadly with a graceful, weeping habit. The young growth emerges with a distinct purple hue, which contrasts beautifully against the older silvery-blue foliage, making it a standout feature plant.

Flowering occurs in late winter to early spring, with clusters of fluffy, spherical blooms that attract bees and other pollinators. Hardy and fast-growing, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, and is drought-tolerant once established. While it’s highly ornamental, the Purple Cootamundra Wattle can self-seed and naturalise, so care should be taken when planting near bushland.

The Purple Cootamundra Wattle is best used as a specimen tree, windbreak, or for adding vibrant seasonal interest to urban and rural gardens alike. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage fresh purple foliage.
