Groundcover Common Boobialla (Ground Hug)

Myoporum insulare Ground Hug PBR

Groundcover Myoporum

🌿 Myoporum insulare Ground Hug (Ground Hug™)

Ground Hug™ is a purpose-bred, ultra-flat selection of the Australian native boobialla designed to do one job exceptionally well: cover ground fast and never give weeds a chance. Unlike typical forms of Myoporum insulare that mound or shrub up over time, this PBR cultivar stays remarkably low while travelling outward in a wide, dense sheet of foliage.

What makes it different

  • True groundcover habit — commonly sits around 10–15 cm high

  • Runs wide, not tall — can extend 4 m+ across as it matures

  • Foliage forms a tight canopy that shades soil and blocks weed germination

  • Small white flowers appear through the warmer months, followed by berries

  • Bred specifically for landscape performance, not just garden use

Where it excels

This plant shines in places where many groundcovers fail:

  • Slopes and embankments needing erosion control

  • Coastal gardens exposed to salt air and wind

  • Broad nature strips, roadsides and public landscapes

  • Path edges and open beds where a flat, uniform carpet is preferred

  • Areas that need to look green year-round with minimal maintenance

Tough by nature

Being derived from a coastal Australian species, Ground Hug™ handles:

  • Drought once established

  • Frost to around –5 °C

  • Poor, sandy, or clay soils (as long as they drain)

  • Heat, reflected light, and harsh sun

How to use it in design

Think of it as a living mulch. Instead of bark or stones, this plant becomes the surface layer — softening hard landscapes, reducing heat, and removing the need for constant weeding. It pairs well beneath feature trees, along fence lines, and across large open areas where you want a continuous green plane rather than individual plants.

Care in brief

Plant in full sun, water through establishment, then largely let it do its thing. An occasional edge trim is usually all that’s required to keep lines neat.

If you need a groundcover that is flat, fast, native, and extremely durable, Ground Hug™ Myoporum is one of the most landscape-reliable options available in Australia.
